How does Jesus help calm our worries? Like a tender shepherd Jesus knows his sheep, and he knows his preceding words about worldly wealth may exacerbate our anxiety. Join us as we see him remind us of the fullness of our life, our value in our Father’s eyes, and the futility of our anxiety to give us anything of value. Drawing on his words in this and earlier paragraphs we also consider the practical means he provides us to combat the worry and anxiety that beset us. May God increase our faith!

How does one pray? In the midst of a passage on hypocrisy Jesus provides us instruction on prayer. First he tells us how (not) to pray, then he provides us a prayer that we may both pray ourselves and use as a model. Join us as we consider the six petitions of the Lord’s Prayer, of how to pray for God’s glory and our good, together with some further reflection on growing in prayer.

How does the history of God’s mercy free us to confess our sin and give us hope for the future? Join us as we walk through the next chapter of Nehemiah and see a people poised to hear God’s word, worship for a wondrous creator and redeemer, sweeping cycles of sin and salvation, and a penitential prayer that is finally resolved in salvation in Christ.

The wall is built, the doors are set, the surrounding peoples have fallen in their own esteem as they detect the Lord’s hand at work. And yet danger remains. Join us as we consider the next chapter and see the necessity of guarding the church, of building up the church, and of leaning on the Lord as he manifests this protection and growth in his church across generations.

What does it look like to take up the whole armor of God in the face of determined opposition? This morning we consider (1) the death throes of a defeated enemy, (2) the strategies of a prepared warrior, and (3) wearing the armor of God today. As we consider Nehemiah in light of Ephesians 6:10–20 we see a living example of what it looks like to put on the whole armor of God.

How are prudence and preparation reflexes of faith? Consider with us how Nehemiah 4 demonstrates that the enemies of God’s people do not rest, that Christ equips his people to engage the enemy, and that God shows his strength in our weakness.

How are we to respond in the face of discouraging news concerning Christ’s church? Join us as we meet Nehemiah and consider his response of prayer joined with action, trusting in the God of the covenant to honor his word and show favor to his people, noting that underneath it all is confidence in God’s character as a covenant-keeping God.

Why is it that we are often only struck by spectacular instances of God’s care? Join us as we consider Ezra 8 and the ways it directs us to consider God’s watchful care over his people and over our own lives, in both spectacular and mundane ways. And let us give thanks to God!

Paul signs off his letter to the church in Philippi with a standard closing greeting—or is it? Does he, perhaps, instead put his own particular spin on a letter closing, just as he does with letter openings, and subtly sum up all that he has communicated over the course of his epistle?
