The Disciples’ Confusion: Following the Transfiguration, Jesus instructs the disciples to keep quiet about His glory until after His resurrection, bringing them back to the reality of His impending death. Unwilling to accept a suffering Savior, the disciples point to Malachi’s prophecy that Elijah must come first, expecting the Messiah to immediately establish a victorious kingdom rather than undergo suffering.
-
Jesus’s Correction: Jesus clarifies that Elijah has already come in the person of John the Baptist, who was rejected and executed. He challenges them to see that if God’s forerunner and the Son of Man must suffer to defeat sin, suffering and dying to oneself are unavoidable parts of the Christian life.
-
The Application: True salvation requires dying to self-reliance, worldly comfort, and control. The pastor concludes by asking believers whether the trials and sufferings of life will make them wiser, deeper, and sweeter in Christ, or leave them bitter, hard, and cynical.
